Back in March1, I wrote that Trump was testing every feature of fascism. At the time, some still hesitated to use the word. But now, months into his second term, that hesitation is over. We are not talking about warning signs anymore. We are talking about reality.
This is fascism. And it is happening in the United States right now.
Historians, political scientists, and even former Trump officials warned us this moment was coming. Trump is not hiding it. He is proud of it. From branding antifa a “terrorist organization” to threatening universities that allow protests, he is criminalizing dissent itself. That is what fascists do: silence opposition, consolidate power, and normalize violence as politics.
If we pretend this is just another round of political drama, we are finished.
Fascism is not a slur. It is a system of power with recognizable traits. Scholars like Robert Paxton and Umberto Eco defined them years ago. Trump is still checking every single box, only now he is checking them with a Sharpie.
1. EXTREME NATIONALISM
“America First” has mutated into a purity test. Trump’s government is deporting immigrants en masse, threatening to strip citizenship, and framing “real Americans” as anyone loyal to him. Outsiders and political opponents are enemies of the state.
2. DISDAIN FOR HUMAN RIGHTS
Trump’s human rights record was already shameful. Now he openly admires Putin, praises dictators, and calls protesters “terrorists.” His administration has revived family separation policies and is stripping federal funding from universities where students dare to speak out.
3. SCAPEGOATING ENEMIES
Fascists need enemies to survive. Trump has declared war on antifa, a loosely organized anti-fascist movement with no central leadership, branding it a “major terrorist organization.” He is also using the assassination of right-wing commentator Charlie Kirk as a pretext to target left-wing dissenters. He does not need facts. He only needs scapegoats.
4. SUPREMACY OF THE MILITARY
Trump is threatening to deploy federal troops to U.S. cities and invoking the Insurrection Act as though democracy is something to be dominated, not protected.
5. RAMPANT SEXISM
Fascism and patriarchy go hand in hand. Strongmen always lean on “traditional” gender roles to consolidate power. Trump is doing exactly that, rolling back reproductive rights, attacking LGBTQ+ protections, and catering to Christian nationalists who want women back in the kitchen.
6. CONTROL OF MASS MEDIA
Trump does not need to seize CNN when Elon Musk’s X and a far-right propaganda machine do the job for him. His relentless attacks on journalists and his disinformation ecosystem are designed to make truth optional and lies patriotic.
7. OBSESSION WITH NATIONAL SECURITY
Every move is framed as “security.” Surveillance, bans, raids, and expanded death penalty powers are all justified in the name of protecting the nation. Trump weaponizes fear of immigrants, crime, and “domestic terrorists” to justify authoritarian control.
8. RELIGION AND GOVERNMENT INTERTWINED
Christian nationalism is not policy, it is a political weapon. Trump caters to the evangelical right with the promise of rolling back LGBTQ+ rights and enforcing “biblical” education. He does not believe it, but he knows it keeps his base alive.
9. CORPORATE POWER PROTECTED
Here is where today’s fascism looks different. Tech billionaires and corporate elites are not resisting, they are collaborating. Musk, Thiel, and others are aligning with Trump in exchange for deregulation, tax breaks, and influence. This is not just fascism, it is techno-fascism, where corporate and state power merge to crush opposition.
10. SUPPRESSION OF LABOR UNIONS
Unions are democracy in the workplace, which makes them a threat to Trump’s America. His administration is already working to weaken collective bargaining and tilt every economic scale toward corporations.
11. DISDAIN FOR INTELLECTUALS AND THE ARTS
Universities and artists are targets precisely because they resist authoritarian narratives. Trump’s threats to defund schools that allow protests are straight out of the fascist playbook: punish culture, punish knowledge, punish free thought.
12. OBSESSION WITH CRIME AND PUNISHMENT
Trump’s “law and order” is really law for his enemies and order for himself. Protesters are “criminals.” Journalists are “traitors.” Meanwhile, his allies escape accountability. Expanding the death penalty and empowering police to “dominate” is about consolidating fear-based rule.
13. CORRUPTION AND CRONYISM
This regime is a loyalty cult. The inner circle is not about competence, it is about devotion. Billionaires, extremists, and loyalists profit off the presidency while the line between state and business disappears.
14. ATTACKS ON ELECTIONS AND DEMOCRACY
Trump has never accepted an election he did not win. Now Republican legislatures are openly drafting ways to override results. If this sticks, elections in the U.S. become theater, staged rituals to validate his power.
THIS IS NOT A DRILL. THIS IS THE BLUEPRINT.
Some analysts downplay it, arguing Trump is too clownish to be a Mussolini. That is dangerous denial. Fascism does not always march in polished boots. Sometimes it swaggers in golf pants and Truth Social posts.
Others warn that Democrats are doing little more than watching from the sidelines, hoping norms will save us. They will not. Silence is complicity. Fascism does not arrive with one big bang. It arrives like this, piecemeal, pretext by pretext, each new “exception” becoming the new rule. And once it consolidates, it is too late.

We resist. Every day. Everywhere.
Call out disinformation.
Support independent journalism.
Protest. Organize. Educate.
Refuse to normalize this.
Trump is not testing the waters anymore. He is diving headfirst into authoritarianism and daring us to stop him.
The only question is: will we?
